WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Packy Witkowski led all scorers with 29 points as Coast Guard erased a seven point deficit with just 46 seconds left and beat Clark 105-99 in overtime as the Bears won their first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game of the season.
Coast Guard snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to a 10-5 overall and 1-4 in the conference while Clark drops to 5-1 overall and 1-4 in the NEWMAC.
Witkowski was 10 of 20 from the field including 8 of 12 from behind the arc in the win while adding a team-high seven rebounds and five assists.
Junior Noah Baldez added 21 points, eight assists and five rebounds while senior Nolan Benson had 20 points in the win. Senior Luke Daniels added a career-high eight assists for the Bears to go with his seven points.
Witkowski knocked down back-to-back treys as the Bears started the second half on an 8-3 run to take a 56-42 lead just over a minute into the second half.
Clark responded with seven straight to start a 19-2 run as the Cougars took a 61-58 lead with 13:44 left in the half.
The Cougars led 70-66 with 8:50 left before the Bears used a 6-2 spurt to pull even 72-72 on a layup by Baldez with 7:05 remaining in the second half
Coast Guard trailed 77-76 before a 3-pointer by Jason Frazer and layup by Benson gave the Bears an 81-77 lead with 3:37 remaining in regulation.
Clark seemed to put the game away scoring 11 straight taking an 88-81 lead with just 46 seconds left.
Witkowski buried consecutive 3-pointers in just nine seconds cutting the deficit to 88-87 with 32 seconds left.
Davern made one of two free throws for a 91-89 lead before Benson's layup with five seconds left tied the game 91-91 and sent it to OT.
With the game tied 96-96 with 3:31 left in overtime, Luke Daniels scored a basket before a Witkowski trey gave Coast Guard a 101-96 lead with 1:30 left.
Benson would make a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left for a 104-99 lead.
Coast Guard would use a 13-3 run in the first half to open up a 46-33 lead with 2:30 left. The Bears led 48-39 at the half as Witkowski led all scorers with 11 points including a trio of 3-pointers (3-5). Coast Guard has led at halftime in four of its five NEWMAC games this season.
The Bears shot 52.8 percent (38 of 72) in the while while making 12 of 21 from 3-point range. The Cougars were 33 of 67 (49.3 percent) and connected on 5 of 21 from downtown. Clark held a 42-32 edge on the glass.
Coast Guard is back in action on Saturday when they host Springfield in a NEWMAC game at 1:00.
