NEW LONDON, Conn . – Junior Noah Baldez had a career-high tying 21 points and team-high eight rebounds leading Coast Guard to a 65-55 win over Wentworth on the second day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic at Connecticut College.
Coast Guard has won four straight to start the season and the Bears are off to their best start since the 2007-'08 season when the team started the season with nine straight wins and would win a school record 24 games and advance to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament.
Senior Nolan Benson had his fourth straight double figure game of the season as he finished with 12 points while junior Packy Witkowski added 11 points for Coast Guard.
Baldez and Benson earned a spot on the All-tournament team for Coast Guard.
The Bears would score the final eight points of the first half to lead 41-33 at the break. Coast Guard shot 51.5 percent in the first half (17-33) and connected on 5 of 13 from 3-point range as Baldez led the way with 13 points in the opening half.
Coast Guard used a 9-2 run to take its largest lead of the second half, 52-37 with 13:34 left.
The Leopards would go on a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to five at 54-49 with 4:54 left before the Bears scored nine straight to put the game away taking a 63-49 lead with 1:41 left.
The Bears shot 41.7 percent (25 of 60) in the win and connected on 7 of 24 from 3-point range and Coast Guard had a season low eight turnovers.
Coast Guard is back in action on Nov. 27th when the Bears host Fisher in a non-conference game at 7:00.
