NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard had six players score in double figures on their way to a 105-87 victory over Mitchell Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Bears improve to 6-1 overall, while the Mariners fall to 3-6 on the year.
Junior Bryce Schroeder had a career high 20 points with three rebounds and three assists. Sophomre Justin Kane notched his fourth double-double in his last five game with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures for Coast Guard was sophomore Noah Baldez (16) senior Micah Baldez (17), sophomore Sean Gratock (14) and freshman J.T. Cox (12).
Leading Mitchell was sophomore Hasani Williams who had 20 points and five rebounds. Senior Alan Morgan was 4-6 from three, finishing the game with 18 points. Senior Mack Bertram-Gregory had 14 points and eight rebounds while senior Colizel Lewis scored 10 points.
The Bears jumped out to an early eight point lead as Micah Baldez knocked down a jumper off a pass from Graytock to make the score 13-5 with 16:17 left in the first.
With 4:41 left to play in the opening period, Coast Guard stretched their lead to 20 points with a 10-0 run capped off by Schroeder going coast-to-coast after grabbing a defensive board and laying it in making the score 35-55 and forcing a Mariners timeout with 2:58 left in the first half.
The Bears entered the second half with a 17 point lead and kept their lead at double digits for the rest of the game as Coast Guard went wire to wire for the 105-87 victory.
It was a hot shooting night for the Bears as they were a season high 55.1% (43-78) from the floor and made 4-12 (33.3%) from beyond the arc. Coast Guard dominated in points in the paint (56-22), points off turnovers (21-11) and bench points (35-22) while taking care of the ball with a season low 11 turnovers.
Mitchell made 34-76 (44.1%) field goals and shot 42.9% (12-28) from three. The Mariners have shot over 40% from three in their last five games.
