NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Sophomore Packy Witkowski had a career-high 31 points and classmate Justin Kane had a double-double with 18 points and a career-high tying 14 rebounds as Coast Guard beat Lyndon State 92-66 in the second day of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at Connecticut College.
Witkowski was 7 of 14 from 3-point range and made 10 of 20 field goals while also grabbing eight rebounds in the win.
Coast Guard, which beat Southern Maine easily 91-40 at home on Saturday on the opening night of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic for its first win of the season, picked up right where it left off again on Sunday to improve to 2-1 on the season.
Sophomore Sean Graytok added 14 points off the bench for the Bears as he went 10 for 10 from the foul line, while classmate Noah Baldez added 13 points and a game-high five assists in the win.
The Bears shot 41.7 percent (30-72) from the floor and connected on 11 of 29 from 3-point range while Lyndon State shot 35.8 percent (24-67) and made 10 of 29 from behind the arc.
After Lyndon State's Zach Knowlton knocked down a 3-pointer early in the second half making the score 43-41, the Bears ran off 13 straight to begin a 23-3 run as Coast Guard took a commanding 66-44 lead with 14:52 left and they were never challenged the rest of the way.
Witkowski knocked down back-to-back treys in the first 32 seconds of the game and the Bears jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first minute of play.
Coast Guard had its largest lead of the half 26-8 following another 3-pointer by Witkowski with 13:03 left in the first half.
The Bears still maintained that 18 point lead, 38-20 with six minutes left before Lyndon State used an 18-3 run cutting the deficit to 41-38 with 32 seconds left in the half. Coast Guard led 43-38 at the half.
Coast Guard is back in action on Nov. 30th at Fisher for a 7:00 tip.
