BRISTOL, R.I. – Junior Austin Coene had a game-high 25 points and nine rebounds leading Roger Williams to a 83-76 win over Coast Guard in the season opener for both teams.
Senior Micah Baldez and sophomore Packy Witkowski each had 15 points to led Coast Guard while sophomore Noah Baldez finished with 14 points for the Bears. Micah Baldez had a game-high six steals while sophomore Justin Kane led the Bears with nine rebounds in just 18 minutes.
The Hawks would score the first bucket of the second half to take a 48-38 lead before Coast Guard would respond with a 10-2 run closing to within 50-48 following an old fashion 3-point by Noah Baldez with 16:43 left in the game.
Sophomore Rich Pugliese's 3-pointer capped a 9-0 run by Roger Williams as the Hawks took a 68-57 lead with 8:36 left.
The Bears would quickly respond with seven straight, the final four by Micah Baldez cutting the deficit to 68-64 with 6:41 remaining.
Senior Jaylen Jennings hit the third of three straight 3-pointers for Roger Williams as the Hawks scored nine straight taking control and pushing the lead to 77-64 with 5:20 left in the game.
Coast Guard had one last run in them trailing 79-68 with 3:24 left, the Bears would use an 8-2 spurt to pull to within 81-76 with 49 seconds left.
Roger Williams shot 52.6 percent in the win (30-57) while making 8 of 22 from 3-point range. The Hawks were 5 of 11 from behind the arc in the second half.
The Bears were 32 of 72 from the field (44.4 percent) and made 5 of 19 from 3-point range.
Coast Guard jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the first two minutes before Roger Williams used an 11-1 run to take a 13-8 lead with 13:53 left in the first half.
The Bears got in some early foul trouble as three starters, Kane, junior Bryce Schroeder and Micah Baldez each had two fouls with 14:10 left in half.
The Hawks led 27-18 before Coast Guard would score seven straight, five by freshman J.T. Cox, to cut the deficit to 27-25 with 7:27 left.
Sophomore Jason Frazer's 3-pointer with 2:54 left in the half capped a 9-2 run by the Bears giving Coast Guard 36-35 lead. The Hawks would score eight straight and outscore the Bears 11-2 the rest of the half including a 3-pointer at the buzzer by freshman JJ Pfohl for a 46-38 lead at the break.
Roger Williams shot 53.1 percent in the first half (17-32) while connecting on 3 of 11 from behind the arc while Coast Guard shot 46.9 percent in opening half (15-32) and made 4 of 9 from 3-point range. Witkowski led the Bears with 11 points in the first half.
The Bears are back in action on Saturday night when they host Southern Maine at 8:00 in the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip Off Classic.
