NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Kevin Collins had a game-high 21 points as Maine-Presque Isle held off a late Coast Guard rally to beat the Bears 82-78 in a non-conference game.
The Owls, who led 45-32 at the half, led by as many as 18 in the second half at 81-63 with 1:42 left before the Bears used a 15-1 run to end the game.
Senior Derek Healy added 18 points while Jordan Cook (12) and Maurice Harris (11) also finished in double figures for the Owls, who shot 52.6 percent from the floor (30-57) in the win, improved to 5-4 on the season. Senior Kim Collins had a game-high six blocks.
Freshman Patrick Witkowski led the Bears with 17 points while classmate Max Lampe finished with a career-high 14 points. Freshman Justin Kane had his third double-double with 11 points a game-high 10 rebounds while sophomore Luke Daniels tied a career-high with ten points while adding a had a career-high seven assists.
The Bears shot 43.9 percent from the field (29-66) and made 5 of 13 from 3-point range. Coast Guard held a 47-31 edge on the glass with 13 offensive rebounds.
Coast Guard led 19-15 following a basket by freshman Aaron Anthony with 9:50 left in the first half before the Owls scored eight straight to start a 17-2 spurt taking a 32-21 lead with 5:25 left in the half.
Collins made three free throws with 3:35 left in the first half giving the Owls their largest lead of the half 39-25.
Maine-Presque Isle shot 55.2 percent in the first half (16-29) while making 5 of 11 from 3-point range while Coast Guard was 12 of 33 from the field in the opening half (36.4 percent) making 2 of 7 from behind the arc in the first half.
Coast Guard is back in action at Roanoke on Dec. 30th at 6:30.
