SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Simon Kilday and Sean Martin each had 14 points leading Springfield to a 83-60 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game, the Bears final game of the season and the Pride's regular season finale.
Coast Guard finishes the season 5-20 overall and 2-12 in the NEWMAC while Springfield improves to 19-6 overall and 10-4 finishing in third place in the conference and will play in the NEWMAC tournament next Saturday at WPI.
The game marked the last on in the careers of Coast Guard senior Devonte Weems and John Benedict. Weems finished his career with 267 assists which is fifth all-time at the Coast Guard Academy.
Junior David Anderson led the Bears with 11 points, nine rebounds and three assists while Weems had ten points in his final game.
Springfield shot 45.5 percent from the floor (25 of 55) and made 9 of 18 from behind the arc while Coast Guard was 25 of 62 from the field (40.3 percent) and the Bears were 4 of 15 from 3-point range.
The Pride jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Bears closed it to 13-9 with 10:56 left in the first half on a bucket by junior Eli Sponseller.
Springfield pushed the lead to double digits at 24-13 with 3:48 left in the half and they led 31-24 at the break.
Coast Guard trailed 34-28 with 17:51 left in the game when the Pride put the game away by outscoring the Bears 20-5 over the next six minutes taking a 54-33 lead with 12:02 left.
Springfield would lead by as many as 26 in the second half as they led 72-46 with 5:34 left.
