NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard scored touchdowns on its first three possessions of the game jumping out to an early 21-0 lead and cruised to a season opening 34-7 win over Alfred State.
Senior Cam Cecchini (11 carries, 71 yards) scored a pair of touchdowns while junior quarterback Ethan Goldcamp threw for 240 yards and a touchdown in his first career start to lead the Bears offense.
The Bears finished with 346 yards of total offense (240 passing, 106 rushing) while the Coast Guard defense held Alfred State to just 208 total yards, just 23 on the ground.
Alfred State junior Austin Parker returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown, but offsetting penalties negated the score.
Coast Guard special teams would play a big part in the Bears opening the scoring as sophomore Michael Goldsworthy blocked a punt on the Pioneers opening possession and senior Tyler Exum recovered at Alfred State 14-yard line.
Cecchini would scamper nine yards for a touchdown and junior Cole Austin's extra point gave the Bears a 7-0 lead with 10:34 left in the first quarter.
The Bears would force another punt and this time the Coast Guard offense drove 55 yards with junior Jeff Porter scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run as the Bears took a 14-0 lead with 5:26 left in the opening quarter.
Following another Pioneer punt, Coast Guard would go 52 yards with Cecchini scoring a on 1-yard run for a 21-0 lead with 2:09 left in the first quarter.
The Bears had 151 yards in the first quarter (107 passing) while Alfred State had 45 total yards in the opening quarter.
Alfred State again appeared to get on the board, but freshman Reice Woodward had a 20-yard reception, but fumbled on the 1-yard line before he could score and senior Ryan Robertson recovered in the end zone for a touchback with 9:27 left in the first half.
Neither team scored in the second quarter as the Bears led 21-0 at the half. Coast Guard had just 21 yards in the second quarter.
The Bears would add to their lead on the opening possession of the second half with a 31-yard field goal by Austin with 11:16 left for a 24-0 lead.
On their next possession, following a punt, the Bears needed just one play, a 37-yard touchdown pass from Goldcamp to freshman Justin Moffat pushing the lead to 31-0 with 8:32 left in the third.
Coast Guard also had a long touchdown called back as Cecchini rumbled 96 yards for touchdown, but a holding call, negated his long touchdown in the final minute of the third quarter.
The Bears would add a 27-yard field goal by Austin with 7:55 left for a 34-0 lead.
The Pioneers would get on the board with a long 15 play-75 yard drive capped on a 13-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Hunter Evingham to Woodward on 4th-and-4 with 2:13 left.
Goldcamp completed 20 of 32 passes and he hit nine different receivers in the win. Senior Cody Bain led the way with four receptions. While Moffatt had a team-high 55 receiving yards.
Woodward led Alfred State with eight receptions for 72 yards and a touchdown.
Robertson led the Coast Guard defense with 11 tackles, six solo, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery while sophomore Patrick Crowley finished with 10 tackles, eight solo and had the Bears only interception in the game.
The Bears open the season with a win for the third straight season scoring 34 points in all three of those wins. They beat Anna Maria 34-6 in 2015 and 34-0 last season.
