TOP MOMENT #6 – DEREK VICTORY'S RECORD BREAKING PERFORMANCE EARNS GOLD HELMET

Coast Guard senior quarterback Derek Victory won the prestigious New England Football Writers' Gold Helmet, sponsored by the Jack Grinold Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation as he set or tied seven records in the Bears 56-54 win over Curry on Oct 15th.

The Gold Helmet is presented to the Division I (FBS and FCS) and II/III football players who have established himself for outstanding contributions to his team on the given week at the New England Football Writers luncheon at Harvard.

Victory, who was named the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Co-Offensive Player of the Week, set single-game individual school records with 525 passing yards and 547 yards of total offense. The 525 passing yards is an NEFC single-game record as well as a team single game record, breaking the mark of 492 yards that the Bears set earlier this season against Catholic.

In the win, he set the Coast Guard career record for touchdown passes with 44 and tied the single-game record with six touchdown passes. He was 32 of 46 with three interceptions in the win.

He becomes just the seventh Coast Guard player to win the Gold Helmet, Mark Behne won the award last season when he had two fourth quarter interceptions and 14 tackles in the 21-14 win at Maine Maritime.

Defensive back Joe Rizzardi (2013), cornerback/kick returner Pat Bennett (2010), quarterback John Resch (2009), quarterback Niles Pierson (2006), and running back Scott Huerter (1988) were the other Bears to win the award.

Victory broke the Coast Guard single-season passing yards record finishing with 2,636 yards breaking the previous mark of 2,514 yards set by Jon Resch in 2012. He leaves with 15 school or conference records. (see list below)
