NEW LONDON, Conn.—Sophomores Joe Rizzardi and Tyler Henning were both honored by the New England Football Conference (NEFC) with Player of the Week honors for their outstanding performances in the Bears 37-20 win over Nichols in the conference opener for both teams.
Rizzardi earned NEFC Defensive Player of the Week honors following his huge day as he intercepted a pair of passes in the first half and returned them both for touchdowns giving the Bears a 20-13 halftime lead.
He had a 28-yard return for a touchdown in the first quarter to give Coast Guard a 10-6 lead and then had a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the first half which broke a 13-13 tie. Rizzardi also added six solo tackles as Coast Guard won its first game of the season.
Henning was perfect on the day making a trio of field goals from 33, 26 and 32 yards while also making all four extra point attempts and punting three times for a 42-yard average to earn NEFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors.
On the season, Henning is tied for the NEFC lead with six field goals, he is 6 for 7 on the season with a long of 44 yards. He is a perfect 9 for 9 on extra points this season and 48 for 48 during his career.
Coast Guard will host Western New England on Saturday at 1:30 in a NEFC game as part of Celebrate New London Day at the Academy.
