EMERSON, Ga. – Coast Guard dropped a season-opening doubleheader to Centre College of Kentucky to open the season at Perfect Game Complex.
The teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday at noon.
GAME ONE: Centre 23, Coast Guard 3
Centre sent 17 men to the plate in the top of the first and scored 12 runs to beat the Bears 23-3 in seven innings.
The Bears were held to just four singles by Will Stephens, Brendan McNeil, Alex Murdoch and Reed Jenkins.
Coast Guard scored all three runs in the first with McNeil and senior Kyle Jackson driving in runs on ground outs while senior Timbo Duncan drove in a run as he reached on an error.
GAME TWO: Centre 8, Coast Guard 2
Senior Colton Cannon was outstanding as he pitched seven innings and scattered just four hits, allowed one unearned run, walked a batter and struck out 10 leaving with a 2-1 lead.
The Colonels would score four in the eighth and three more in the ninth for the 8-2 win.
The Bears trailed when Centre scored an unearned run in the fourth, but Coast Guard pulled even when Luke Thompson led off the sixth with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Zach Serna.
Coast Guard took the lead in the seventh when Jackson led off with a triple and scored on a double play giving the Bears a 2-1 lead.
Serna was 3 for 4 with a double, Jackson had two hits while Jeremy Lhotka doubled and Jon Pressley singled to account for the Bears seven hits.
