Bears Swept by Albertus Magnus
NEW LONDON, Conn. – Albertus Magnus scored seven runs in the fourth en route to a 12-3 win over Coast Guard in the opener before completing the sweep with a 3-1 six inning win in the nightcap.
The Falcons (5-6) led 4-2 after three innings and had five hits and took advantage of five Coast Guard errors in the fourth to blow the game open taking an 11-2 lead.
Senior Zak Sokolis had a two-run single in the fourth before sophomore Jake Pritchard added an RBI double, the only two players to drive in runs in the inning. Five of the seven runs were unearned.
Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the first on and RBI single by sophomore Kyle Wood scoring junior Danny Sabourin, who led off with a single and stole second.
The Falcons took the lead in the second on RBI singles by sophomore Sage Leonard and junior Tyler Robertson.
The Bears tied it 2-2 in the second on an RBI single by junior Matt Hanks.
Albertus Magnus scored twice in the third as they took advantage of four walks with just one hit, an infield single by junior Anthony Pellegrino. A run scored on a wild pitch while the other came across on a bases loaded walk to Pritchard for a 4-2 lead.
Coast Guard got one back in the third as Wood singles and came around on an RBI fielder's choice by senior Lukas Laplante to make the score 4-3 before the Falcons broke the game open in the fourth.
Freshman Aaron Macchia (1-1) picked up his first collegiate win as he pitched four innings of relief in the opener and allowed just two hits and an earned run while striking out two.
Coast Guard starter Sean Barry (0-1) took the loss in his first collegiate start as he allowed four runs, all earned, on six hits and walked three while striking out one.
Freshman Eric Vrissis threw two hitless innings in relief for Coast Guard.
Pritchard was 3 for 4 with three RBI's in the win while Robertson was 3 for 3 and Sokolis added a pair of hits to lead the Falcons 13 hit attack.
Sabourin and Wood each had two hits in game one for Coast Guard.
In the nightcap, the Falcons scored twice in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and win 3-1 in a game called after six innings due to darkness.
In the fourth, Pellegrino led off with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a single by sophomore Jordan Kubilus. Pritchards grounder to short scored Pellegrino before Kubilus later scored on a double play.
Wood (0-2) went the distance for the Bears and allowed six hits and just one earned run while walking one and striking out one.
Sophomore Mike Hughes (1-0) got the win in relief as he worked two innings and allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Senior Patrick Dornfield had two hits to lead the Falcons in game two.
Coast Guard drops to 4-11 on the season. The Bears are back in action on Saturday when they host Emerson in a NEWMAC doubleheader at noon.
