NEW LONDON, Conn.—Senior pitcher Derek Petty has been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Pitcher of the Week as he did not allow a run while picking up a win and save as the team went 4-1 during the week.
Petty, who earns NEWMAC Pitcher of the Week honors for the second time this season, was outstanding this week. He did not allow a run in 9 2/3 innings. He came on in relief against MIT on Saturday with the bases loaded and the Bears leading 2-1. He registered a strikeout and fly out to end the game and record his first save of the season.
On Sunday, he fired eight scoreless innings allowing eight hits while walking two and striking out four as the Bears beat MIT 2-0 to win the important weekend series and move closer to clinching a NEWMAC tournament.
Petty is 5-2 on the season with a remarkable 1.52 ERA, he leads the team with five wins and 37 strikeouts. In his last nine appearances, he has allowed just three earned runs in 45 innings for an eye-popping 0.60 ERA. He is tied for third in the NEWMAC with five wins and fifth in strikeouts (45).
Coast Guard is 18-11 overall and 8-6 in conference play, they can clinch a berth in the conference tournament with one more NEWMAC win. They play at Springfield this afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
