Bears Drop Pair in Florida
FORT MYERS, FLA.--(3/9/12)--Coast Guard dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic as the Bears lost 5-3 to Widener and 12-2 to Neumann.
Coast Guard left the bases loaded in both the eighth and ninth innings of the 5-3 loss to Widener in the first game of the day.
Senior Eddie Kalankiewicz had two of the Bears seven hits in the opener that was tied 3-3 before Widener scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
Coast Guard had tied the game 3-3 when Kalankiewicz led off the fifth with a triple and scored on an RBI by junior Tyler Babkiewich. Junior Mike Massaro accounted for the Bears other two runs with a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the third which tied the game 2-2.
Junior Nate Toll (0-2) started and took the loss after working a solid six innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, just three earned while walking four and striking out four. Junior Curt Barrett threw a pair of scoreless innings in relief allowing just one hit.
In the second game, Neumann scored seven runs in the fourth turning a 3-2 lead into a 10-2 advantage.
Junior Derek Petty (0-1) worked just 3 2/3 innings and was touched for ten hits and eight earned runs to take the loss. Juniors James Diddell and Mike Packer both pitched well out of the bullpen for Coast Guard. Diddell went 3 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and a pair of earned runs while Packer pitched a hitless inning.
Freshmen Mike Shannon and Tim Betts each had the first two hits and first RBI's of their career in the game while junior Ed Sella also had two hits for Coast Guard.
The Bears, who drop to 3-4 on the season, play their final game down South on Saturday vs. Salem State before returning home on Sunday.
