TOP MOMENT #10 - COAST GUARD WIN'S SUPERINTENDENT'S TROPHY FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW
The Bears earned the Superintendent's trophy for the second year in a row topping Merchant Marine 13-7.
Coast Guard clinched the victory as the tennis team won its spring opener in convincing fashion not dropping a set in a 9-0 win over the Mariners.
Other sports that earned victories over Merchant Marine were men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field (indoor and outdoor), men's and women's and sailing, wrestling, men's basketball and women's swimming.
Beginning in 2002-2003 an incentive was added for winning the athletic contests between Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. Rivals on the fields of competition and allies on the waters of the world, the Academies began to battle of the prestige of winning the Superintendents' Trophy.
One point is awarded for each sport competition between the schools. At the conclusion of the academic year the institution with the most points is presented the Superintendents' Trophy.
The trophy is bestowed by either the Secretary of Homeland Security, who oversees the Coast Guard Academy, or the Secretary of Transportation, who oversees the Merchant Marine Academy, and creates a friendly rivalry in Washington, D.C. between the two secretaries.
A smaller replica of the trophy graces the desk of the winning secretary until the conclusion of the competition the following year.
This year it is currently tied 3.5-3,5 going into the new year.
