TOP MOMENT #8 - SHORT, TAMINGER EARN NEWMAC ROOKIE OF THE YEAR HONORS

Coast Guard freshman Ben Taminger earned Co-Rookie of the Year honors as he won the 800 meters and was part of the winning 4x400 relay as host Coast Guard placed third at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships.

Taminger won the 800 meters in 1:56.32 and was a member of the 4x400 that captured first place in 3:20.40 at the NEWMAC championships helping the Bears to a third place at the conference championships.

Taminger held the fastest time on the team in the 800 (1:53.23) just missing the school record by a little over a second (Carl Messale, 1:52.02, 1993)

Short not only earned the All-NEWMAC Rookie of the Year Award but was also named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) New England All-Region third team.

Short had a sensational freshman season for the Bears. She started all 40 games at shortstop and led the team and was fifth in the NEWMAC with a .437 batting average. Short led the Bears with 17 doubles, seven homers, 38 RBI's, a .738 on base percentage and a .533 slugging percentage.

Her 38 RBI's were second most in the NEWMAC while her seven homers tied her for fifth in the conference.

Short becomes the fifth Coast Guard player to earn NEWMAC Softball Rookie of the Year honors and first since Jessie Richardson won the award in 2012.

Colleen Perry (2004), Amanda Frederick (2008) and Hayley Feindel (2009) also won the award for Coast Guard.
