LOWELL, MASS.-(4/12/08)--In fast conditions on the Merrimack River, the US Coast Guard Academy women's varsity eight (ranked #3 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III weekly national polls) defeated #11 Colby College. The Bears varsity eight lead wire-to-wire and finished just over 17 seconds ahead of Colby in a time of 5:48.99. The top eight moved well off of the line and continued to build it's lead throughout the course of the race.

The CGA Women's Crew Varsity 4+ A entry, comprised of rowers from the Bear's second varsity eight lead off the day of racing with a solid win over traditional fours schools including Franklin Pierce, UMass-Lowell, Massachusetts Maritime Academy as well as a CGA B entry in a time of 7:01.56, 8 seconds ahead of the field.

In the most exciting race of the day, the women's novice eight lost to Colby's Third Varsity eight, comprised almost entirely of novice rowers, by less than a second. At the 1000m mark, the Bears held a two seat advantage but the Colby eight put on a huge push that put them level 1500m. Moving into the last 500m the Bears responded well, stopping Colby's momentum, and created some momentum of their own only to get edged out as both boats came across the line. Colby won in a time of 6:36.42to CGA's 6:37.24.

And in the women's second varsity event, CGA entered a combination of the their two varsity fours that raced earlier and were unable to match the consistent speed of Colby, finishing in second, 16 seconds off the lead in a time 6:23.11 but well ahead of the the third place finisher, Franklin Pierce's varsity eight.

The CGA Women's Crew now looks to defend their title as NEWMAC Champion at the 2008 NEWMAC Championships that will be held at Lake Quinsigamond, Saturday, April 19 beginning at 8:30.
