LOWELL, MASS.--(4/12/08)--The US Coast Guard Academy Men's Crew came away with solid wins on Saturday racing Colby College on the fast Merrimack River, in Lowell, Massachusetts.
The CGA Men's Crew Varsity 4+, lead off the day of racing with a good performance, but came in second to Colby while well ahead of the other traditional fours schools including Franklin Pierce and UMass-Lowell. The Colby four, consisting of four athletes from their varsity eight, looked extremely smooth and controlled the race throughout, winning in a time of 6:04.43, nine seconds ahead of the Bears.
In the Varsity eight, the Bears took control of the race right away jumping out to a one length lead over Colby and continued to pull away the remainder of the race finishing in a time of 5:22.69, just over 20 seconds ahead of Colby.
In the men's second varsity eight race, the CGA Men's Novice eight was also entered and while both boats moved steadily away from Colby's 2V, the Bears' eights fought to the finish line. The 2V captured the win in a time of 5:20.36, less than four seconds ahead of the novices and over 20 seconds ahead of Colby.
Next Saturday the Bears take on University of Rhode Island and the University of Massachusetts at Lake Quinsigamond.
