 Amanda Frederick hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs in the game one win. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/12/08)--Freshman Amanda Frederick was 3 for 3 with a pair of home runs, three RBI’s and three runs scored as Coast Guard beat Babson 7-4 in game one to knock the Beavers out of a first place tie in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Babson, which trailed 7-4 in the sixth inning of game two, scored seven runs in each the sixth and seventh inning for an 18-9 win to salvage the split.
In the opener, Coast Guard scored twice in the first on a two-run double by Courtney Wolf and the Bears added one more in the third on an RBI single by Becky Miller scoring Annette Boston, who led off the inning with a double.
In the fourth, Boston reached on an error scoring Laura Hutchinson before Frederick blasted a two-run homer to right center field for a 6-0 lead chasing Babson starter Jess Byrn.
Babson got two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Courtney Thurston, Caroline Barr and Jess Cohen led off with consecutive singles, Cohen’s was an RBI single, before Barr scored on an RBI groundout by Jess Winer to make the score 6-2.
In the sixth, Cohen delivered a two-run double to cut the deficit to 6-4.
Frederick hit a towering home run down the left field line in the home half of the sixth as the Bears extended the lead to 7-4.
Crystal Lee Coonan (10-14) went the distance for Coast Guard allowing nine hits and four earned runs while walking four and striking out four to get the win.
Bryn (11-6) went 3 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, six runs, five earned while walking two and striking out seven and took the loss. Barr allowed just the one hit, the homer by Frederick in 2 2/3 innings of relief while walking one and striking out two.
Cohen had three hits and three RBI’s in the opener for Babson.
Boston had two hits and scored three runs for Coast Guard.
In game two, Babson took advantage of 13 walks in the final two innings to erase a 7-4 deficit.
Coast Guard (10-20, 5-9) led 6-2 after three innings as the Bears scored three runs in both the first and second innings to erase and early 2-0 deficit.
Babson (20-12, 9-3) scored twice to make it a 6-4 game in the fourth with Meg Cyr delivering an RBI single, the other run scored on an error.
The Bears got one back in the fifth on a solo homer by Colleen Denny and Coast Guard led 7-4 after five innings.
Coonan also started game two, but was hit on the hand on a single by Cyr in the sixth and she had to leave, Katie Murray came on and struggled to find the plate walking five in the sixth and seven in the seventh while hitting three batters in the seventh as the Beavers put the game way.
Danielle Liska (7-4) got the win in relief for Babson as she worked five innings and allowed just two hits and one run while walking three and striking out five.
Byrn and Cyr each had two hits in game two for Babson.
Denny hit a pair of homers in game two and drove in three runs for Coast Guard while Leanna Minton and Hutchinson each had two hits for the Bears in game two. |
