Softball - Bears Score 30 Runs and Sweep MIT
Annette Boston had a huge day as she went 7 for 9 with three RBI's and scored five runs.
CAMBRIDGE, MASS.--(4/7/08)--Annette Boston was 7 for 9 with three RBI's and five runs scored while Leanna Minton and Carin Sweeney each had five hits on the day as Coast Guard swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader from MIT. The Bears won the opener 16-2 in five innings before winning game two, 14-5 in six innings. Both games were stopped due to the eight-run rule.
In the opener, Coast Guard jumped out a to 6-0 lead after two innings and cruised to the 16-2 win. Boston was 4 for 5 with four runs scored while Sweeney had three hits and three runs scored and Minton added three hits.
Crystal Lee Coonan went the distance allowing six hits and two earned runs while walking one and striking out three to pickup the win.
In game two, Amanda Frederick's grandslam highlighted a seven-run second inning as the Bears erased an early 2-0 deficit and won the nightcap 14-5.
MIT scored three runs to cut the deficit to 7-5 after two innings before Coast Guard scored twice in the third on an RBI double by Erin Cullen, who later scored on an error for a 9-5 lead.
Coast Guard (9-16, 4-6) put the game away with three runs in the fifth on an RBI single by Minton and a two-run single by Boston for a 12-5 advantage.
The Bears added two more in the sixth on an RBI by Sweeney and an RBI single by Laura Hutchinson.
Coonan (9-11) picked up her second win of the day, going the distance again, allowing 12 hits and five earned runs, while walking two and striking out two.
Courtney Wolf had two doubles and scored a pair of runs in game two.
