NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/6/08)--Julie Parnell’s two-run single in the seventh broke a 1-1 tie in the opener as Clark beat Coast Guard 3-1 in the opener and then 10-5 in game two to complete the sweep of a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader.

In the opener, Amanda Frederick’s RBI single in the fourth plated Annette Boston, who singled and stole second, to give Coast Guard a 1-0 lead before Clark came right back and tied the game in the fifth as Chelsea Proulx scored on a passed ball.

In the seventh, pinch hitter Alex Gauthier led off with a walk, Proulx sacrificed Julie Murray, who ran for Gauthier, to second, Lauren Blake walked, the two runners advanced on a passed ball before Parnell’s two-run single down the left field line. Parnell had two of Clark’s five hits in the opener.

Melissa Traft (6-4) went the distance for Clark allowing just four singles and an earned run while walking two and striking out five to get the win.

Coast Guard’s Crystal Lee Coonan was the tough luck loser as she went the distance and allowed five hits and just one earned run while walking four and striking out three.

In the nightcap, Coast Guard jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Boston and a towering two-homer to left by Courtney Wolf.

Clark (14-6, 6-2) took the lead with four runs in the third, Darcy Kurashige-Elliott had an RBI single to tie the game before Joanna Clark’s sacrifice fly gave the Cougars a 4-3 lead, all four runs were unearned.

The Cougars added single runs in the fourth, on an RBI single by Katherine Tutela, and in the sixth on an RBI single by Warren before scoring four more in the seventh to put the game away. In the seventh, Lauren Blake had a the big hit, a two-run double.

Sarah Carter (6-2) went the distance, scattering nine hits and allowing five earned runs to pickup the win while Coonan (7-11) allowed 11 hits, but just four earned runs to take the loss as Clark had six unearned runs in game two.

Blake had three hits while Warren, Tutela and Kurashige-Elliott each added two hits for Clark in the second game.

Wolf and Frederick each had two hits to lead the Bears (7-16, 2-6) in game two.
