COVENTRY, CONN.--(4/5/08)--Trinity, ranked #1 in New England beat the Bears varsity eight to capture the Emerson Cup, named for Fred Emerson of Old Lyme who was instrumental in the formation and funding of both of the programs.

Off the line, Trinity pushed out to a two seat advantage and extended this in very workman-like fashion as the race progressed. The Bears maintained a stronger rhythm then they showed last weekend but were never able to gain any momentum and cut into the Trinity's lead. Both boats showed good closing speed and the Bantams won in time of 5:58.8 to CGA's 6:09.5 and retained the Emerson Cup for 2008. UConn finished third in a time of 6:45.8.

The CGA Varsity 8 was comprised of Andrew Slater (So), Matt Vanderslice (Sr), Thomas Olsen (So), Nick Iannarone (Jr), Tomas Mameniskis (Jr), Kristopher Kesting (So), Philip Constantino (So), Roy Cromer (So), and Tomas Naujokaitis (Jr).

The men's varsity second suffered their first loss of the season in a similar performance to that of the varsity, also placing second to the eventual winner Trinity 2V. The Second Varsity 8, finishing six seconds behind Trinity 2V and five seconds ahead of the Trinity 3V, in a time of 6:12.7, was comprised of Courtney Elder (Fr), Riley Matsco (So), Dan Halsig (Jr), Andrew Haley (Jr), Dan Swaim (So), Joe Direnzo (So), Sam Merritt (So), Sven Johnson (So), and Nick Jokela (So).

In the men's first novice 8, the Bears found themselves in a battle that would last for 2000 meters. Both Trinity and CGA fought extremely hard, matching surges and both making incredibly strong pushes for the line, finishing one second apart with the Trinity Novice on the winning side in a time of 6:12.4.

The Novice 8 included Hilary Grimes(Fr), Nick Greaver (Fr), John Olbrys (Fr), Dave Kent (Fr), Austin King (Fr), Brian Bonomi (Fr), Dave Birdsong (Fr), Corbin (Fr) and Alex Schmidt (Fr).

And in the Varsity Fours event, the CGA crew of Esther Kim (Sr), Bryan Kelly (Jr), Evan Steckle (So), Tenor Galamabush (Sr), and James Heuser (So) led wire-to-wire to come away with a great win in a time of 6:47.4; 13 seconds ahead of Trinity.

The Bears will travel to Lowell, Massachusetts next Saturday morning, April 12, to take on Colby College and UMass-Lowell.
