COVENTRY, CONN.--(4/5/08)--Coast Guard's varsity eight, ranked #5 in the CRCA/NCAA Division III national poll, lost to rival Trinity College, ranked first in the nation, but beat Division I University of Connecticut.
Off the line, all eights were level and as they moved through the second 500 meters the Bears started to drift off the pace of the higher rating crews. As they moved through the middle of the race the Bears found themselves in third positon while the Bantams took control of the race. With just under 800 meters to go the Bears began to move back on UConn, and finished the race in second in a time of 7:03.9, 13 seconds off the fast early season pace of Trinity and less than a half a second ahead of UConn.
The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Sr), Adriana Knies (Sr), Maggie Ward (Jr), Emily Holt (Sr), Lauren Milici (Jr), Kate Dacimo (Fr), Sarah Jane Otey (Fr), Sarah Southard (Sr), and Rory Keegan (Jr).
The women's varsity 4's both had disappointing days, falling off the pace early and never able to move back on the field. The 'A' four, consisting of Jess Vogel (So), Sarah Thompson (Jr), Shannon McElroy (Sr), Alyssa VanDelden (Jr) and Nikki Dillinger(Jr) finished third in a time of 8:10.6, 28 seconds off of the winner Trinity and 15 seconds behind second place UConn.
In the 'B' Four race, the CGA four consisting of Bailea McMillen (Fr), Cate Gillen (Jr), Lelea Littlefield (Jr), Yahaira Cervantes (So) and Ashley Stone (Jr) finished in a time of 8:31 well off of the two Trinity entries.
In the Women's Novice 8, the Bears came away victorious over Trinity in a spirited race. Although the Bears trailed the UConn Novices the entire race, the win over their DIII competitor was special in that it was their first win in division this year. The Bears finished in a time of 7:22.8; 15 seconds behind the winner UConn 'A', 5 seconds ahead of Trinity and 16 seconds ahead of UConn 'B'.
The Novice 8 consisted of Allison Murray (Fr), MaryKate Netrour (Fr), Amy Harrison(Fr), Amanda Cousart (Fr), Gina Guiterrez (Fr), Mia Reizun (Fr), Rachel Douglas (So), Jenifer Lopez (Fr), and Amy Tow (Fr).
The Academy women will travel to Lowell, Massachusetts next Saturday morning, April 12, to take on Colby College and UMass-Lowell.
