NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/3/08)--MIT jumped out to a 10-0 lead, seven of those runs unearned, enroute to an 11-5 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.

MIT scored twice in the first on an RBI single by Kevin Wheeler and bases loaded walk to Steven Nunez and two more times in the second with Thomas Phillips delivering an RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

The Engineers scored five more runs as they sent 10 men to the plate in the third inning as Dan Hyatt had an RBI double while David Nole added a two-run single, which chased Coast Guard starter Will Becker (1-4). Coast Guard had one error in each of the first three innings as six of the nine runs were unearned. Becker lasted just 2 2/3 innings, allowing eight hits, nine runs, three earned while walking four and striking out one.

MIT (8-8, 2-1) extended the lead to 10-0 on a throwing error in the fifth.

Coast Guard (5-12, 0-5) scored all five of its runs in the sixth on a two-run double by Kevin Higgins, a two-run home run by Ryan Milligan, his first collegiate homer, and a sacrifice fly by Steve Lewis.

Jesse Karr kept the Bears in the game working 5 1/3 innings of relief while scattering seven hits and allowing just two runs, one earned.

MIT scored its final run in the eighth on an RBI single by Brian Doyle, who had two hits and stole four bases in the game.

Ryne Barry (3-0) started and went 5 1/3 innings allowing seven hits and five earned runs to pick up the win for MIT.

Phillips and Ben Bersanti each had three hits to lead MIT which totaled 17 hits.

Bill Birch led Coast Guard with three hits.
