NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/24/08)--Robert Gilbert scattered three hits and allowed an unearned run over seven innings while Mike Ziman highlighted a six-run seventh inning with a three-run home run leading Johnson & Wales to a 12-1 win over Coast Guard in a non-conference game.
The Wildcats (7-6) led 3-1 heading into the seventh when Eric Rapuano led off the inning with a solo homer to right field to begin the six run inning in which Johnson & Wales had eight hits, sending 12 batters to the plate. Ziman hit his three-run shot to right to make the score 7-1 before Frank Nadjavestky added an RBI double and John Kuschman had an RBI single to close the scoring in the seventh.
Gilbert (1-0) walked one and struck out four to pick up the win. Chad Miller worked a perfect eighth and Rich Fonseca allowed a single in the ninth.
Coast Guard starter Kevin Thomas (1-2) allowed just five hits and two earned runs through six innings before running out of gas in the seventh, when he allowed all six earned runs on five hits to take the loss.
Ziman drove in four runs as he also had a sacrifice fly in the third while Mike Manley led the Wildcats with three hits. Mike Wengzn, Brad Jackson, Mike MacKay and Rapuano each had two hits for Johnson & Wales, which has won four straight.
Adam Reckley had two of Coast Guard’s four hits.
