Will Becker allowed just two hits and one run, but took the loss in the opener.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(3/22/08)--Wheaton’s Chris McDonough fired a seven-hit shutout outdueling Will Becker, who allowed just one run on two hits in the opener, and the Lyons, ranked 13th nationally, scored 15 runs in game two to sweep Coast Guard 1-0 and 15-1 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader, the conference openers for both teams.

The only run in the first game came in the home half of the fifth as Wheaton, whose field was unplayable served as the home team in both games. Jake Yagjian walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a two-out RBI single by Sean Munley.

McDonough (2-1) did not walk a batter and struck out three while allowing seven singles to pickup the win.

Becker (1-2) allowed a double to Robert Foote in the fourth and the single to Munley in the fifth. He walked five and struck out three in taking the loss.

Brian Yurovich had two hits for Coast Guard in the opener.

In game two, Jason Cluclas and Tad Skelly each drove in three runs as Wheaton cruised to a 15-1 win. Yagjin had three hits while Paul Malaguti and Scott Ciccone each added two hits for the Lyons (9-4), who have won seven straight.

Wheaton starter Adam Gingras (1-0) worked eight innings and allowed eight hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out two to pickup hits first win of the season.

Coast Guard scored its only run of the day in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Adam Reckley scoring Kevin Keefe, who led off the inning with a double.

Ken Franklin and Brian Lisko each had two hits in game two for Coast Guard.

Wheaton has won the NEWMAC regular season championship all nine years that the league has existed.
