FORT MYERS, FLA.--(3/8/08)--Merchant Marine jumped out to a 10-1 lead after four innings and held off Coast Guard 12-9 in game one and the Mariners beat the Bears 15-12 in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader at the Gene Cusic Classic.
In game one, Coast Guard scored seven runs in the top of fifth to pull to within 10-8 as junior Kevin Keefe and sophomore Steve Arguelles each had two-run doubles while junior Brian Yurovich, junior Bill Birch and senior Adam Reckley.
Reckley and Birch each had three hits as the Bears totaled 13 hits in the game. Arguelles, Yurovich and senior Brian Lisko each added two hits for Coast Guard.
Junior Pete Schofield took the loss for the Bears (0-2) in the opener.
In game two, Merchant Marine jumped out to a 9-0 lead after two innings and held off Coast Guard, which scored six times in the bottom of the seventh and final inning.
Arguelles, Reckley, sophomore Keith Laird, junior Steve Lewis and senior Ken Franklin each had two hits for the Bears. Reckley, who started and took the loss on the mound, led the way with four RBI's in game two.
