Women's Basketball - Tamminen Keys 19-0 Run as Bears Win 20th

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/20/08)--Freshman Jennifer Tamminen had a career-high 23 points including six 3-pointers and keyed a late 19-0 run over the span of four minutes and 16 seconds with four 3-pointers as Coast Guard rallied from a 10-point second half deficit and won its 20th game of the season beating Mount Holyoke 58-48 in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game.
Mount Holyoke (5-18, 2-10) led Coast Guard 43-33 with just 8:47 left in the game before the Bears scored 19 straight to take a 52-43 lead with 4:31 left.
Tamminen, who had 17 second half points, was 7 for 11 from the field and 6 for 10 from 3-point range in the game.
The Lyons led 29-22 at halftime behind 11 points from sophomore Erin Cain.
Sophomore Melissa Martinelli had 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Coast Guard (20-4, 10-2) while senior DeCarol Davis added 12 points and a game-high five assists.
Mount Holyoke held the NEWMAC’s leading scorer Natalie Moyer scoreless for the first time all season.
Cain led the Lyons with 16 points while junior Katie Austen added 10 points. Senior Marisa Barone had a game-high 11 points for Mount Holyoke.
Coast Guard shot 39.6 percent from the field (21-53) and 33.3 percent from 3-point range (11-33) while Mount Holyoke shot 37.5 percent from the field (18-48) and 42.9 percent from 3-point range (3-7). The Lyons outrebounded the Bears 39-31.
With the win, Coast Guard secured at least the No. 2 seed for next week’s NEWMAC tournament and the Bears still have an outside shot to win their first ever regular season with a win over Springfield and a Wheaton loss to Clark on Saturday.
