Women's Basketball - Martinelli Named NEWMAC Player of the Week

NEW LONDON, CONN.--(2/11/08)--Coast Guard Academy sophomore Melissa Martinelli was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women’s Basketball Player of the Week as Coast Guard won all three games including the school-record 17th of the season.
Martinelli, who won the NEWMAC Player of the Week honors for the third time this season, averaged 19.3 points and 12 rebounds as Coast Guard moved into first place in the conference as the Bears handed Wheaton, which was 8-0 in the NEWMAC, its first conference loss of the season, 76-61.
She scored 15 of the Bears first 18 points in the second half and finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds in a win over rival Connecticut College to start the week.
Martinelli, who leads the NEWMAC in scoring with 17.5 points per game to go with her team-high nine rebounds per game, closed out the week with 21 points and eight rebounds in the win over Wheaton.
Coast Guard is 17-3 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
