SPRINGFIELD, MASS.--(1/16/08)--Melissa Martinelli scored a season-high 25 points and Natalie Moyer added 20 points, including her school-record 209th 3-pointer to lead Coast Guard to a 65-54 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Springfield.

Coast Guard is off to its best start in school history with a 10-2 record, 3-0 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield fell to 6-7 overall, and 1-1 in the conference.

For the winning Bears, only four players scored. They were led by Martinelli's 25 points, including 7-of-8 from the free throw line. She was followed by Moyer with 20 points, including 12-of-12 from the free throw line while senior Corinne McCormack had a double-double with a season-high 15 points and a season-high 14 rebounds. She was 5-of-5 from the field. The only other player to score for the Bears was senior DeCarol Davis who added five points.

This game pretty much belonged to Coast Guard. The Bears took a quick 5-0 lead on a lay-up by Martinelli and a 3-pointer by Davis. Springfield closed it to 5-4. Moyer's school-record 208th career three-pointer made it, 10-4, Bears, with 13:45 remaining in the half.

Another 3-pointer by McCormack with 8:50 left gave Coast Guard its largest lead of the first half at 22-11. But six straight points by Connors on three buckets sliced the lead to 22-17 with 6:38 left.

Springfield would close the gap to 29-28 when junior forward Corey Finch hit a jumper with 19 seconds left. SC had outscored CGA, 17-7, to end the half.

When McCarthy made two free throws 25 seconds into the second half, SC grabbed the lead for the first time. It turned out, however, to be the Pride’s only lead.

A Martinelli lay-up with 18:40 left gave Coast Guard a 31-30 advantage. Springfield would tie it twice, at 33-all on a 3-pointer by Cotter, and then at 35-all on a lay-up by Connors with 16:05 left.

But a 3-pointer by Moyer would give Coast Guard the lead for good at 38-35 with 15:56 left. When Cotter made a lay-up with 6:08 left, SC had cut it to three, 48-45. A jumper by Connors then cut it to three once again, 50-47, with 5:24 to go.

A lay-up by Martinelli and a jumper by Moyer with 4:13 left gave CGA a little separation, 54-47. From there, it was Coast Guard applying the hammer with excellent free throw shooting (23-of-26 for the game). CGA was 7-of-8 from the line in the last 1:18 of the contest.

Coast Guard is now tied for first place with Wheaton, as each team is a perfect 3-0 in league play.
