WORCESTER, MASS.--(1/9/08)--Sophomore Melissa Martinelli had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Coast Guard took control of the game with a 10-0 run in the final four minutes to break a 39-39 tie enroute to a 53-43 win over WPI in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both teams.

Coast Guard (8-2, 1-0) is off to its best start in school history while WPI drops to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

WPI’s Caitlin Macko made one of two free throws with 4:27 left to tie the game at 39-39 before Natalie Moyer and Katie Colella each hit three-pointers before DeCarol Davis hit a hook shot in the lane as time expired on the shot clock, as the Bears took a 47-39 lead with 1:52 left in the game.

Moyer had 15 points despite playing just 20 minutes due to foul trouble while DeCarol Davis added 12 points for the Bears. Corinne McCormack led Coast Guard with 13 rebounds.

Martinelli scored eight of the Bears first 13 points as Coast Guard held WPI to just one field goal and led 13-3 with 8:27 left in the first half.

WPI responded with nine straight and outscored Coast Guard 16-4 as the Engineers took their first lead of the game, 19-17 on a three-pointer by Kaileen Selen with 3:38 left. WPI led 20-19 at halftime.

Martinelli led the Bears with 12 points and six rebounds in the first half. She was five-for-eight from the floor while the rest of the team was just two of 17 in the first 20 minutes. Coast Guard’s leading scorer Natalie Moyer played just nine minutes and had three points in the first half as she had two fouls.
