Men's Basketball - Sowers Named NEWMAC Player of the Week
Al Sowers shot a red-hot 61 percent from three-point range to earn NEWMAC Player of the Week honors.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/10/07)--Coast Guard Academy senior Al Sowers was named the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week as the Bears won all three games to improve to 8-0 for the first time in 15 years.
Sowers had a huge week as he averaged 20.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, two assists and two steals. The senior point guard shot 61 percent from three-point range (14-23) and 56 percent from the field (19-34). He had 26 points each in wins over Becker and Merchant Marine and he hit the game winning three-pointer with 35 seconds left in a 74-72 win over Wentworth.
He moved into second place on the Coast Guard Academy all-time three-point list as he finished the week with 215 treys. He is 20 behind the Bears’ all-time leader Jon Murphy (‘00), who has 235 career trifectas.
