Al Sowers hit the game-winning three-pointer with 35 seconds left as the Bears improved to 7-0 on the season.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(12/6/07)--Al Sowers knocked down a three-pointer with 35 seconds left giving Coast Guard a 73-72 lead and Coast Guard held on to win its seventh straight and remain unbeaten with a thrilling 74-72 win over Wentworth in a non-conference game.
Jeff Prebeck, who got an offensive rebound which led to the Sowers game winner, made one of two free throws with five seconds left to put the Bears up 74-72.
The Leopards (4-2) did not get a shot off in the final seconds.
Wentworth led by as many as five in the second half, 53-48 with 11:33 left before Coast Guard used a 12-0 run to take a 60-53 lead with 8:30 left.
Coast Guard’s Craig Johnson’s basket put the Bears up 70-66 with 2:56 left before Sherrad Prezzie-Blue hit a three pointer that made the score 70-69 with 2:41 left. Prezzie-Blue accounted for 12 straight Leopard points in the final five minutes on four three-pointers, the final one gave the Leopards a 72-70 lead with 1:34 left. Prezzie-Blue, who was held to just two points in the first half, finished with a team-high 21 points as he hit on five-of-eight from three-point range in the second half.
Prezzie-Blue hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut a 68-60 deficit to 68-66 with 3:25 left. Coast Guard’s Craig Johnson’s basket put the Bears up 70-66 with 2:56 left before Prezzie-Blue’s three made the score 70-69 with 2:41 left.
Coast Guard (7-0) led by as many as ten in the first half at 27-17 with 8:09 left in the first half before the Leopards used a 10-2 run to cut the deficit to 29-27 with 6:04 left. The Bears led 38-35 at halftime.
Senior Grant Johnson led Coast Guard with 17 points, junior Craig Johnson had 16 points and Prebeck finished with 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds.
Junior Brad Bryant finished with 13 points while senior Ed Bolton added 11 points for Wentworth. Freshman Shane West led the Leopards with nine rebounds.
