(photo by Jeff Bartlett) SPRINGFIELD, MASS.--(11/28/07)--Senior Corinne McCormack’s layup at the buzzer gave Coast Guard a 62-61 win over Western New England as the Bears overcame a fierce Golden Bears comeback in a non-conference game to remain unbeaten.
Coast Guard scored the first four points of the second half taking its largest lead of the game at 37-21 with 18:56 left.
Senior Natalie Moyer’s basket with 5:54 left gave Coast Guard (4-0) a seemingly comfortable 54-42 lead before WNEC’s comeback began by making six consecutive free throws in a span of nine seconds to cut the lead to 54-48 with 5:35 to play.
WNEC freshman Taryn Belowsky cut the lead to 60-59 with 1:18 left on a reverse layup and following a pair of Coast Guard turnovers, senior Jen Dabrowski scored in the lane giving WNEC a 61-60 lead with 11.7 seconds left, its first lead since a 7-5 lead in the opening minutes.
Moyer finished with a season-high 26 points, including nine of 10 from the foul line, to lead Coast Guard while McCormack finished with a season-high 14 points while her and junior Chanel Lee tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.
Dabrowski led WNEC with 23 points while Belowsky finished with 17 points.
With the score tied 11-11 with 12:21 left in the opening half, Coast Guard used an 11-2 spurt with Moyer scoring the first seven points of that run as the Bears took a 22-13 lead with 6:37 left in the first half.
Coast Guard took its largest lead of the half when freshman Jennifer Tamminen knocked down a pair of free throws with 24 seconds left giving the Bears a 33-21 lead which they took into halftime.
The Bears, who were 7 for 19 from three-point range (36.8 %) in the first half, dominated on the boards in the first 20 minutes as they out rebounded the Golden Bears 27-14 with Lee, who entered the game with four total rebounds in the first three games, leading the way with seven first half caroms in seven minutes played.
Coast Guard is 4-0 for the first time since the Bears began the 1997-’98 season with five straight wins.
