Volleyball - Bears Garner Several NEWVA Honors
Megan Durbin has been selected to play in the NEWVA Senior Classic on Sunday.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(11/8/07)--Coast Guard Academy junior Nicole Gurr was named All-New England first team while senior Corinne McCormack was named to the second team by the New England Women’s Volleyball Association (NEWVA).
In addition, McCormack and senior Megan Durbin were selected to compete in the NEWVA Senior Classic on Sunday at Endicott College.
Gurr, who leads the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference with 4.94 kills per game, has 441 kills this season. She earns first team honors from NEWVA for the second straight season, she was second team All-New England choice as a freshman.
McCormack, who is second all-time at the Academy with 1,516 kills is second in the NEWMAC this season with 4.05 kills per game while totaling 353 on the year. She earns All-New England honors for the fourth straight season. She was a first-team selection in 2004 and 2006 and second team selection in 2005 and again this year.
Durbin, who leads the team with 271 digs is part of a senior class which has posted a record of 102-17 for a winning percentage of .857 over four years with four trips to the postseason, an ECAC Championship in 2005 and a trip to the NCAA Elite 8 last season.
Coast Guard (21-6) earned its sixth straight trip to postseason play this year and the second-seeded Bears have advanced to the semifinals of the ECAC Division III New England tournament and will take on third-seeded Colby Sawyer on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Brandeis in the semifinals. The championship match is Saturday at 4 p.m. The Bears won the ECAC Championship in 2002 and 2005 before advancing to the Elite 8 in the NCAA Tournament last season.
