Junior James Toohey scored the only Coast Guard goal in a 2-1 double overtime loss. WORCESTER, MASS.--(11/7/07)--Coast Guard was under two minutes away from a victory, but Worcester State posted a dramatic come from behind victory Wednesday evening at Coughlin Field in the ECAC quarterfinal match-up against the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
The fourth-seeded Lancers scored in the 88th minute in regulation to tie the game and then with just 1:01 left in the second overtime to earn the 2-1 win over the fifth-seeded Bears, who finish the season 9-7-1.
Coast Guard opened the scoring in the 9th minute when a Worcester State foul set up a virtual corner kick for the visitors and junior Ben Walsh sent a ball across the box and junior James Toohey punched home the first goal of the game. That would be all the scoring in the frame as Coast Guard out shot the Lancers 10-8 in the first half.
In the second half, the Lancers picked up the pressure over the last 20 minutes of play and capitalized in the 88th minute when senior Eder Baptista scored the game-tying goal, unassisted, to knot the game, 1-1 with just 1:37 left, sending the game to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, the game appeared to be headed to a shootout with time winding down in the second overtime but with 1:01 remaining, junior Josh Richard passed the ball through the crease where junior Brian Andrade was able to convert for the game winner.
Worcester State goalkeeper Albert Jenkins made four saves in the double overtime victory. Coast Guard keeper Tim Olah made four saves in the hard luck loss. |
