Men's Soccer - Late Goal Eliminates Bears from NEWMAC Tourney
David O'Brien scored just 3:06 into the game, but the Bears lost 2-1.
SPRINGFIELD, MASS.--(10/31/07)--Junior forward Brett Drake scored the game winning goal in the 85th minute of play off an assist from senior forward Chad Bonnell as third-seeded Springfield beat sixth-seeded Coast Guard 2-1 in the quarterfinals of the New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament.
The first goal came off of the foot of Coast Guard's David O'Brien three minutes into action. SC sophomore forward Adrian Schippers had the equalizer in the 16th minute of play when he scored on a direct kick taken by junior midfielder Myles Tilton, the score would tied going into halftime.
Late in the game Coast Guard had two golden opportunities when O'Brien headed the ball that graced off of the goalpost, past SC goalkeeper BJ Sturdivant where senior back Michael Kilmartin acrobatically bicycle kicked the ball off the goalline. Then with only 48 seconds remaining in the game, Sturdivant preserved the lead for the pride when he made a diving save off of the foot of Coast Guard's Larry Sheetz.
Coast Guard (9-6-1) now must await word on a possible ECAC Tournament berth to extend its season. The ECAC berths will be awarded on Monday with first round games being played on Wednesday, Nov. 7th. The Bears, who have lost all six games this season by one goal, have earned a berth to the ECAC Tournament in three of the last four years.
