Junior Jen Ferreira led the team with four goals and two assists. A very youthful Coast Guard Academy women’s soccer team battled each and every time out, but the Bears managed just 11 goals in 16 games as they finished the season 1-15 overall and 0-9 in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
Coast Guard dropped six games by two goals or less, three of those by a single goal.
Injuries were a factor for the Bears during the season as sophomore Katie Kurek, who led the team with four goals in 2006, went down with a season ending injury in the third game of the season. Senior Katie Ustler, another one of the Bears top scoring threats, also missed six games due to injury.
Junior Jen Ferreira led the team with four goals, two assists and ten points while classmate Mary Morgan tied for the team lead with two assists and was second on the club with two goals.
The Bears lone victory was a 3-2 win over Colby Saywer at home on Sept. 16th as Morgan had a goal and an assist and freshman Meredith Palo scored her first career goal while Ferreira also scored.
Coast Guard had just two seniors, defender and tri-captain Stacy Chmielecki along with Ustler. Junior Brandy Kinstle, who made 14 starts and appeared in all 16 games, was an exchange cadet from Army and will return to West Point next season.
So, the Bears lose just three players as they look to turn things around in the 2008 season. |
