Coast Guard sailors aboard J/105 Gumption Larchmont, NY--(10/8/07)--The 2007 Storm Trysail Club Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta was held at Larchmont Yacht Club in Larchmont, NY this past weekend. This most prestigious regatta is sailed by many major universities, with 26 major institutions competing this year.
The Coast Guard Academy was fortunate enough to compete aboard Gumption Kevin Grainger’s J/105. Coast Guard easily won this division with three firsts, a second and a third. Gumption was the only boat with multiple bullets, winning the nine boat division by a margin of ten points. Gumption was skippered by team captain Tim Andersen with Brad Peifer calling tactics. Other members of the crew included Bob Lally, Casey Gillikin, Adam Parga and Nate Shakespeare.
In The J/44 class Coast Guard sailed Glory efficiently, managing to finish third of the seven boats in the class. The Coast Guard Crew beat Mass Maritime, St. Mary’s, Michigan and the Merchant Marine Academy. Glory was skippered by Nick Custer, with a strong crew consisting of Brian Komlos, Bill Fyfe, Dan Langston, Justin Valentino, Trevor Clark, Matt Colla, Kevin Tongue, Josh Smolowitz and Chris Salerno.
Congratulations to both Coast Guard Academy J/105 and J/44 crews and special thanks to Kevin Grainger for his time and generosity with the team this weekend!
