Junior Peter Deneen had the Bears goal in a 1-1 tie with # 25 Wheaton. NEW LONDON, CONN.--(10/6/07)--Junior Peter Deneen gave Coast Guard, ranked 10th in New England, an early lead, but # 25 Wheaton tied the game in the second half and the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match ended in a 1-1 double overtime tie.
Coast Guard is now 6-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEWMAC while Wheaton is 8-3-3 and 3-0-1 in conference play.
Peter Deneen scored at 12:15 following a Wheaton turnover in its own half of the field. Senior Ben Weber assisted, as Deneen scored his fifth goal of the season after firing a shot from 20 yards out into the lower portion of the net.
Wheaton freshman David Ferriero knotted the contest with more than 30 minutes remaining in regulation.
The teams last met in a 2006 NEWMAC Tournament semifinal, which was a scoreless draw. Wheaton, which is currently tied for 25th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll and stands third in the region, then won a penalty-kick shootout with the Bears to advance to the title game. The Lyons now have an 11-game unbeaten streak in league play.
Ferriero's fourth goal of the year tied the contest at 58:02. From the left side of the field, freshman David Winrow fired a free kick from 40 yards out toward the net, and Ferriero redirected the pass, heading in the equalizer from the center of the box.
During the combined 20 minutes of overtime, the teams totaled only six shots. For the game, each squad had 20 shots, while the Bears held a 16-4 advantage in corner kicks. Wheaton freshman Cole Davidson turned aside five shots, including one in overtime, while freshman keeper Chris Tarbell made six saves for the Bears.
