 Senior David Lieberman kicked a 20 yard field goal for the only points of the game as the Bears won their ninth straight NEFC Bogan Division Game. BUZZARDS BAY, MASS.--(9/29/07)--The Coast Guard defense had two key interceptions in the final 6:12 of the game and senior kicker David Lieberman kicked a 20-yard field goal with 4:21 left in the fourth quarter for the only points of the game as Coast Guard won its ninth consecutive New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division game beating Mass. Maritime 3-0.
Sophomore Keenan Prather had the key play in the game as he intercepted junior quarterback Joe DeFrank giving the Bears the ball at the Mass. Maritime 23 yard line with 6:12 left in the game.
Coast Guard drove to the Bucs three yard line, scored the only points of the game, the 20-yard field goal by Lieberman for a 3-0 lead with 4:21 left.
Mass. Maritime (2-3, 0-2) began its final drive at its own 31 yard line, but the drive ended as sophomore defensive back Kevin Novick intercepted DeFrank (14 of 27, 154 yards) and returned it 17 yards to midfield with 1:55 left to seal the win for Coast Guard (3-1, 2-0).
On Coast Guard’s opening possession of the second half, senior Jesse Harms booted a 41-yard punt that was downed inside the one-yard line. The Mass. Maritime offense went three-and-out and sophomore Steve Arguelles returned the punt 16 yards to the Bucs 26 yard line giving the Bears great field possession, but the Bucs defense held tough, which set up a 39-yard field goal attempt by Lieberman which was blocked by junior Joe Loughry with 9:32 left in the third quarter.
On the Bears next possession, Coast Guard was forced to punt, but freshman Ryan Howley fumbled the punt by Harms and Novick recovered for the Bears at the Buccaneer 41 yard line.
Coast Guard drove down to the five yard line, but senior Lance Lynch fumbled the direct snap on third-and-two and sophomore Mike Dangoia recovered for Mass. Maritime with 1:01 left in the quarter as the game remained scoreless.
Mass. Maritime took over at its own five yard line and marched 75 yards, but junior Mike Sarapas missed a 37-yard field goal with 9:47 left in the game.
Freshman Douglas Dyke, who carried 38 times for a career-high 101 yards, converted a pair of key third downs on that drive. The first was a third-and-five with a five-yard run to keep the drive alive, giving the Bucs a first down at their own 44 yard line and the second was a six-yard run on third-and-six, putting the ball at the Coast Guard 23 yard line.
Coast Guard was forced to punt following the missed field goal, but Harms pinned the Bucs back deep again at their own 10 yard line, that Mass. Maritime drive ended with the Prather interception.
The first half was dominated by defense and Mass. Maritime held Coast Guard to just 40 yards on 28 plays while the Bucs totaled 135 yards on 42 plays.
Mass. Maritime did a nice job of controlling the ball and keeping the high powered Coast Guard offense off the field as the Bucs held the ball for 19:49 of the games first 30 minutes.
The first half saw no turnovers and each team punt the ball five times.
Coast Guard looked to break the scoreless tie on its final possession of the first half as the Bears drove 39 yards to the Mass. Maritime 25 yard line, but Lieberman just missed a 42 yard field goal, wide left, with two seconds left. Coast Guard kept the drive alive as they converted a fourth-and-four on a 10-yard pass from George to Sam England.
Mass. Maritime had 272 total yards in the game, 154 passing while holding Coast Guard to just 166 total yards, 133 rushing.
Senior quarterback Christian George (7 of 19, 30 yards) led the Bears with 21 carries for 68 yards.
Freshman Kyle Ennis led Coast Guard in nine tackles while sophomore Doug Piper had six tackles, three for loss. Prather also added eight tackles for the Bears.
It was the first shutout for Coast Guard since a 3-0 win at Maine Maritime last season. |
