New London, CT--(9/10/07)--The Coast Guard Academy Sailing Team opened their fall season with top finishes at several regattas this past weekend. At the Pine Trophy Sloop Intersectional hosted by CGA, the team skippered by Sam Ingham '11 with crew Jason Hill '08, Scott Balog '09, and Geoff Single '10 finished 2nd, with 34 points, out of 10 teams. The Bears were able to beat Kings Point by 3 points, who finished 3rd with 37 points. Brown won the event with 19 points. The sloop team will spend the next two weeks preparing to defend their title at the New England Sloop Championships hosted by Brown on September 22 and 23.
The women's team opened their season by sailing two one day trophies in Boston. The first event was the Women’s Man-Lab hosted by MIT. The teams sailed combined divisions in FJs. In A division, Krysta Rohde ’11 and Margaret Woodbridge ’10 finished 4th out of 10 teams. In B division, Jenn Proctor ’11 and Nicole Bredariol ’10 finished 3rd. Overall, the team finished 5th.
On Sunday the team sailed the Captain’s Cup at Tufts University. The regatta was sailed in Larks in combined divisions. Despite very shifty and trying conditions, Rohde and Woodbridge in A division finished 1st in their division and 1st overall. Proctor and Bredariol finished 4th in their division and 13th overall. The team combined finished 2nd out of 11 teams. These two regattas are great results for the women’s team skippered by freshmen and shows great promise for the upcoming season.
The team also competed at the Harry Anderson Trophy at Yale University. Top teams from all over the country sailed in this major intersectional. In A division, Noel Shriner ’08 and Emily Kehrt ’09 finished 17th out of 24 teams with 133 points. In B division, Adam Frye ’08 and Jenn Hom ’09 finished 14th with 125 points. Overall, the team finished 17th. Boston College won the regatta with Roger Williams and Yale in 2nd and 3rd. |
