NEW LONDON, CONN.--(9/8/07)--Coast Guard, ranked 25th nationally, opened its home portion of the schedule by splitting a pair of matches beating rival Merchant Marine 3-0 (30-19, 30-12, 30-21) before falling to #23 Stevens Tech (25-30, 30-23, 30-28, 25-30, 18-16).
In the thrilling second match of the afternoon, the Bears forced a fifth game with a 30-25 win and the Bears jumped out to an 8-5 lead in the decisive game five before the Ducks rallied to tie the match 11-11. The game was tied at 13 and 14 before the Bears took a 15-14 lead and had match point.
Stevens Tech (6-0) scored back-to-back points taking a 16-15 lead before the Bears (1-2) tied the game at 16-16. The Ducks scored the next two points to win the battle of top 25 teams, both of which advanced to the NCAA Division III Elite 8 last season.
