NEFC Bogan Division Offensive Player of the Year quarterback Christian George is back to lead the Bears in 2007.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(6/27/07)--The Coast Guard Academy football team which won the New England Football Conference (NEFC) Bogan Division championship last year with a perfect 7-0 record is ranked No. 24 in Street & Smith’s preseason magazine national preseason poll.
Coast Guard was 8-1 in the regular season last year, tying a school-record with eight straight wins before falling to Curry 34-28 in the NEFC Championship Game and losing to Bridgewater State 41-22 in the ECAC North Atlantic Bowl. The Bears played both the NEFC Championship game and the ECAC Bowl game without the services of NEFC Bogan Division Offensive Player of the Year, quarterback Christian George, who was injured.
The Bears welcome back eight NEFC All-division selections from last year, four first-team selections and four-second team selections led by George at quarterback and Bogan Division Defensive Rookie of the Year free safety Steve Arguelles. Coast Guard returns 15 starters in all, seven on offense, six on defense and the punter and kicker.
Coast Guard will open the 2007 season hosting rival Merchant Marine Academy in the annual Secretaries’ Cup game on Sept. 8th with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m. Coast Guard lost to Merchant Marine 21-7 last year, in George’s first game as a college quarterback, before winning their final eight regular season games.
Coast Guard is one of two teams from New England in the poll as Springfield is ranked 14th.
