Women's Crew - Bears Take 2nd Place in Petite Final at NCAA's Print E-mail
OAK RIDGE, TENN.—-(5/26/07)--The Coast Guard Academy women’s Varsity 8 was edged out by three-tenths of a second by Mary Washington at the finish line of the Petite Final at the NCAA Rowing Championships at Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tennessee with the University of Tennessee serving as the host.

The Bears, who earned their fourth invitation to the NCAA Championship in the last five years, finish another great season eighth nationally.

Mary Washington jumped out to an early lead in the first 500 meters before the Bears made a move taking the lead at about the 750 meter mark and holding it for the rest of the race before being nosed out at the finish line. Mary Washington had a time of 7:03.36 while Coast Guard finished in 7:03.66

The Bears Varsity 8 consists of seniors Christy Davis (coxswain), Heidi Schmidt and Kelly Haupt, juniors Emily Holt, Adriana Knies and Sarah Southard along with sophomores Lauren Milici, Maggie Ward and Sarah Thompson.

The Bears returned to the NCAA Championships after earning three straight berths in 2003, 2004 and 2005. In 2003, the Bears Varsity Eight captured the bronze and the team brought home the NCAA 4th place finish team trophy. In 2004 and 2005 the Bears finished 5th and 8th respectively.
