WORCESTER, MASS.--(5/6/07)--CGA Men’s Crew showed its depth and over all team speed by finishing second out of fifteen teams with 72 points at the New England Rowing Championships held Sunday under windy conditions at Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.

Medal winning performances by the Men’ Novice 8 (Silver), Men’s 2V (Bronze), Men’s 3V (Bronze) and an 8th place finish by the Men’s V8 garnered enough points to finish just behind a very strong Trinity (96) squad but outpaced NESCAC rival Williams (66).

The Men’s Novice team put in very strong performances in both their heat and Grand Final and took second place in a time of 6:24.5, three lengths off the fast pace of Trinity A but open water ahead of Trinity B to win the silver medal. This victory put the CGA novice men in a great position for the upcoming ECAC National Invitational Championship. The Novice 8 included Andrew Slater (Fr), Sam Merritt (Fr), Thomas Olsen (Fr), Daniel Swaim (Fr), Philip Constantino (Fr), Nick Jokela (Fr), Sven Johnson (Fr), James Heuser (Fr), and Joe DiRenzo (Fr).

The Men’s second varsity 8 qualified into the Grand Final from the morning heats and rowed a strong race to finish in the bronze medal position behind Trinity and Wesleyan in a time of 6:27.7. The Bears 2V included Ashley Grim (So), Tom Weiland (Sr), Joe Prado (Sr), Tenor Galambush (Jr), Tomas Naujokaitis (So), Andrew Norberg (Jr), Andrew Haley (So), Dan Halsig (So) and Chris Verlinden (Jr). The Men’s 3V, in a Grand Final only, found themselves in the bronze medal position by the 1000 meter mark but were not able to make any head way on second as they moved away from the rest of the field to finish in a time of 6:27.8, behind Trinity and Wesleyan as well. The 3V included Jess Vogel (Fr), Steve Fainer (So), Bryan Kelly (So), Blake Leedy (Sr), Chris Wildhagen (So), Rob McCabe (Sr), Nick Paparis (So), Matt Poore (Jr), and Nick Herndon (Fr).

The Men’s Varsity 8 ran into a surprise run by Bates College in their heat and finished third sending them to the Petite Finals. In the Petite, the CGA Men led the field from the start until a strong surge by University of Rhode Island left the Bears finishing in eighth, 0.6 seconds off the lead, finishing in a time of 6:27.8. The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Jr), Kris Kesting (Fr), Roy Cromer (So), Tomas Mameniskis (So), Kyle Chavers (Sr), Matt Vanderslice (Jr), Dave Gilbert (Sr), Riley Matsco (Jr), and Nick Iannarone (So).
