WILLIAMSTOWN, MASS.--(4/28/07)--The Coast Guard Men’s rowing team finished their dual racing season with wins against divisional rivals Bates and Tufts as well as ECAC foe Ithaca. The Bears are now well placed to compete in the New England Championships on Sunday.
The Men’s Varsity 8 raced twice on Saturday at the regatta on Lake Onota in Pittsfield Ma. In the morning race the CGA men lost to D1 Marist by 6 seconds and finished ahead of Tufts by 8 seconds, finishing in a time of 6:22.9. In the afternoon seeded finals, the Bears finished 3rd behind Marist and Williams but outpaced Ithaca. The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Jr), Kris Kesting (Fr), Roy Cromer (So), Tomas Mameniskis (So), Kyle Chavers (Sr), Matt Vanderslice (Jr), Dave Gilbert (Sr), Riley Matsco (Jr), and Nick Iannarone (So).
The Men’s second varsity 8 easily won their morning race in a time of 6:23.6 against Williams, the CGA 3V and Tufts, in that order. In the Grand Final, the Bears posted a solid peformance but could not match the closing speed of Marist, finishing 7 seconds behind in a time of 6:26.5 while ahead of Ithaca and Williams by 8 and 17 seconds respectively. The Bears 2V included Ashley Grim (So), Tom Weiland (Sr), Joe Prado (Sr), Tenor Galambush (Jr), Tomas Naujokaitis (So), Andrew Norberg (Jr), Andrew Haley (So), Dan Halsig (So) and Chris Verlinden (Jr). The 3V included Jess Vogel (Fr), Steve Fainer (So), Bryan Kelly (So), Blake Leedy (Sr), Chris Wildhagen (So), Rob McCabe (Sr), Nick Paparis (So), Matt Poore (Jr), and Nick Herndon (Fr). Later in the day, a Varsity 4+ formed from the stern four of the 3V, coxed by Andre Slater, showed some aggressive rowing that earned them a 2nd place finish behind Marist in a time of 7:29.2, and ahead of Williams and Bates.
The Men’s Novice team in a very strong performance took first place in a time of 6:22.6, over a length ahead of second place Ithaca and well ahead of Williams, and Marist. This victory put the CGA novice men in a great position for both New England’s and ECAC championship runs. The Novice 8 included Andrew Slater (Fr), Sam Merritt (Fr), Thomas Olsen (Fr), Daniel Swaim (Fr), Philip Constantino (Fr), Nick Jokela (Fr), Sven Johnson (Fr), James Heuser (Fr), and Joe DiRenzo (Fr).
The Academy men begin their post season racing this weekend at the New England Championships, held on Sunday, May 6 on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA.
