 Pete Schofield, who was perfect through the first four innings of the second game, allowed just two earned runs in eight innings. BABSON PARK, MASS.--(4/28/07)--Jeff Wojnar’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th plated Steve Tahmoush with the game winning run as fourth-seeded Babson eliminated seventh-seeded Coast Guard from the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament with a come-from-behind 5-4 win.
Coast Guard lost its first game of the day 15-12 to third-seeded MIT.
In game two, with Coast Guard leading 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, Bryan Evans tied the game with a lead off home run off Coast Guard starter Pete Schofield which ended Schofield’s afternoon. The Coast Guard sophomore took a perfect game into the fifth inning and allowed just five hits and two earned runs in eight innings work while walking one and striking out two.
Coast Guard got on the board in the second as Brian Lisko and Ken Franklin had back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before Babson starter Jon Igoe hit Brian Yurovich and Bret Nichols to force in a run. Igoe however managed to get out of the bases loaded no out jam without further damage.
The Bears added two more runs in the fourth as Lisko hit a leadoff homer to leftfield, Franklin followed with a triple and Yurovich delivered a sacrifice fly for a 3-0 lead. Nichols then doubled to chase Igoe from the game. Mark Donnellan came on with no outs and got out of the inning.
Ryan Campbell reached on an error to lead off the fifth inning and breakup the perfect game and then Evans followed with a single for the Beavers first hit. Schofield worked out of trouble and Coast Guard maintained its 3-0 lead. Coast Guard (11-18) added an unearned run in the sixth for a 4-0 lead.
Babson (22-11) scored twice in the sixth to cut the deficit in half. Brian Scanlon led off with a walk, Matt Delaney singled and then following a pop out, Billy Schmitt reached on an error which allowed Scanlon to score and Delaney to go to third. Wojnar followed with a sacrifice fly, both runs were unearned.
Jake Bartlett’s RBI double in the seventh scored Evans, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and the Beavers trailed 4-3.
Coast Guard had a chance to add some insurance runs in the eighth as Franklin singled to chase Donnellan and then Yurovich singled to right and Bret Nichols beat out a bunt off of Dave Ahern to load the bases with nobody out. Ahern however got three straight ground ball outs to keep the deficit at just one run.
Ahern (2-1) worked three innings and allowed just the two hits to the first two batters he faced while striking out one to pickup the win.
Adam Reckley (1-1), who game on in the ninth following the Evans home run, took the loss for Coast Guard.
Franklin led Coast Guard with three hits while Lisko and Nichols each had two hits for the Bears. Evans had two hits for Babson.
In the opening 15-12 loss, Kevin Wheeler was 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs, five RBI’s and four runs scored as third-seeded MIT held off seventh-seeded Coast Guard 15-12 in the semifinals of the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.
MIT was cruising as they led 10-2 entering the eighth inning before Coast Guard had five hits and took advantage of five errors in the top half of the eighth inning to pull to within 10-9.
Coast Guard took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth without the benefit of a hit or an error as Chuck Arena and Brian Lisko walked, Arena took two bases and scored on wild pitch and Mike Mitchell later added a sacrifice fly.
MIT quickly answered as Stephen Toth highlighted a four-run fourth with a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie while Wheeler had a two-run single which tied the game at 2-2.
The Engineers score three times in both the sixth and seventh innings.
Wheeler led off the sixth with a solo homer while Stewart Park added a two-run double.
In the seventh, Toth had a two-run single to highlight the inning as the Engineers built the 10-2 lead.
In the eighth, Christian George had an RBI double, Lisko had a two-run triple, Adam Reckley had an RBI single and then George pulled the Bears to within one at 10-9 with an RBI single.
MIT responded with five runs in the home half as David Nole had an RBI single, Wheeler delivered the big blow, a two-run homer, Ben Besanti added an RBI triple and Park closed out the scoring in the inning with a RBI single for a 15-9 lead.
Coast Guard didn’t go quietly in the ninth as Lisko led off with a homer before Ken Franklin and Kevin Higgins walked off closer Steven Nunez.
Bret Nichols had a one-out RBI single and Reckley added a two-out RBI single, but the Bears left two runners on to end the game.
Lisko was 3 for 4 with a double, triple, homer, three runs scored and two RBI's in the opener while Reckley, George and Nichols each had two hits for the Bears, who advanced to the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals in seven of the last eight seasons.
