Women's Crew - Hargis Named Coach of Year; Bears Win Sportsmanship Award
Steve Hargis was named NEWMAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.
NEW LONDON, CONN.--(4/25/07)--Coast Guard Academy women’s crew head coach Steve Hargis has been named the 2007 New England Women’s and Men’s (NEWMAC) Coach of the Year while the team shared the conference’s first ever Sportsmanship Award.
Juniors Adriana Knies and Sarah Southard were named to the All-conference first team while sophomore Maggie Ward was named to the All-conference novice team.
Hargis led the Bears to their first ever NEWMAC Championship on Saturday as the Varsity 8, ranked fourth in the NCAA regional poll, knocked off # 3 Smith for the victory.
He wins the NEWMAC Coach of the Year award for the second time as in 2003 he won that award and was named the DIII National Coach of the Year.
Coast Guard won with a time of 7:14.10 while Smith was second with a time of 7:18.97.
The Bears have been to the NCAA Division III championships in three of the past five seasons (2003, 2004, 2005) and look to return again this season.
