Men's Crew - Bears Sweep at URI |

KINGSTON, R.I.--(4/21/07)--The US Coast Guard Academy Men's Crew swept University of Rhode Island's, University of Massachusetts-Amherst's and University of Connecticut's Varsity, Second Varsity and Novice eights on Saturday at Kingston, RI.
The Bears 1V led from the start and had built as much as a five second lead through the 1500 meter mark but let much of it slip away as both UMass and URI mounted strong attacks over the last 500 meters. The first three crews crossed the finish line within a length of one another with Uconn trailing well off the pace. The Bears finished first in a time of 6:27.99, just 1.3 secs ahead of UMass and 2.4 secs ahead of URI. The Varsity 8 was comprised of Tenley Barna (Jr), Kris Kesting (Fr), Roy Cromer (So), Tomas Mameniskis (So), Kyle Chavers (Sr), Matt Vanderslice (Jr), Dave Gilbert (Sr), Riley Matsco (Jr), and Nick Iannarone (So).
The 2V and 3V both raced in the 2V event and both led the URI 2V wire-to-wire with the Bears 2V winning in a time of 6:41.7, 20 secs ahead of the second place Bears 3V and 32 seconds ahead of URI. The Bears 2V included Ashley Grim (So), Tom Weiland (Sr), Joe Prado (Sr), Tenor Galambush (Jr), Tomas Naujokaitis (So), Andrew Norberg (Jr), Andrew Haley (So), Dan Halsig (So) and Chris Verlinden (Jr). The 3V included Jess Vogel (Fr), Matt Poore (Jr), Bryan Kelly (So), Steve Fainer (So), Chris Wildhagen (So), Blake Leedy (Sr), Nick Paparis (So), Evan Steckle (Fr), and Jaydus Hay (Jr).
In the Novice 8 event, the Bears took on UMass, 2 URI boats and a UConn entry. Mirroring the varsity performances, the Bears won by a commanding margin of 20 secs over their nearest competitor UMass in a time of 6:47.07. The Novice 8 included Andrew Slater (Fr), Sam Merritt (Fr), Thomas Olsen (Fr), Daniel Swaim (Fr), Philip Constantino (Fr), Nick Jokela (Fr), Sven Johnson (Fr), James Heuser (Fr), and Joe DiRenzo (Fr). And in the Novice 4+ event, the first-time combination of Andrew Slater, Nick Herndon, James Jorgenson, Joe Goodglass, and Robert Johnson battled to a second place finish behind UMass and well ahead of UConn, finishing in a time of 8:04.1, 24 seconds off the pace.
Next weekend the Bears travel to Pittsfield, MA to race Williams, Tufts, Bates, Ithaca and Marist on Saturday, April 28. |
